Byron helped me come to the decision to show Nina every part of me. She knew all but one thing. I hoped he’d be wrong about her getting upset.

Keeping that side to myself hadn’t felt like lying. It was only an aspect of what I possessed but had nothing to do with who I was. Nina had shown me a hundred times over that I could trust her with my heart. Something I hadn’t said about anyone.

Nina came outside and got in my car. She looked around the interior, then back at me. “Where the hell did you get an Aston Martin? You drive a Charger.”

I chuckled at how she looked at me sideways. Very few had the privilege of learning about my real life. I pulled out of her driveway, starting the long drive to our destination. “So, there’s something I need to tell you.”

Nina’s face tightened, making me want to kiss her nose. She had the sexiest angry face. I’d seen her upset, but this right here took the cake. She had assumed what I was sure most people would’ve. “If you are involved in anything illegal, turn this damn car around.”

“It’s messed up for Black people to assume that a young, wealthy Black man has to be some type of criminal. There are more ways for us to be financially successful.”

“Victor, I’m not assuming you’re a criminal because you apparently have some type of money. Your ass works for me and there’s no way your salary can afford this. I’m not judging you in any other way than that fact.”

I laughed at her correction. “I told you my stepfather is a successful entrepreneur. After I got my degree in finance and minored in business, he linked me with the right people and I ultimately built my company.”

“Okay. So, why the hell have you been working for me these past years, Victor? Help me understand because you’re scaring me.”

“How?”

“If you work for me when you don’t need to means you might be a creepy stalker or some shit.”

“If I were, I wouldn’t tell you.” Her eyes bugged out, causing me to chuckle. “Nina, I’m not saying I am because I’m not. An actual stalker wouldn’t reveal it.”

“Exactly.” Nina tapped her purse on her lap. “I’m packing anyway.”

“You don’t trust me?”

“I trust you. I’ve carried a gun with me everywhere since Mekhi moved out. It brings me comfort now that there isn’t a man to protect me and my kids.”

“That makes sense. I’d protect you, though. Whenever you need me, I’ll find a way.”

“You need to find a way to explain why you have a two-hundred-thousand-dollar car, Victor. And why have you been working in my shop if you had money like this?”

“Honestly, I got bored. I made enough money to be set for life as a CEO. My life was comprised of long hours and coming home to an empty house. Most of the people around me were employees who’d do whatever I said. Or fake friends who only hung around to get something out of me.
